Essential Oils for Travel

Our annual USA trip is closing in {one week to be precise - *squeeeeel*} and it's time to get ourselves organised. Bags packed. Activities for Le Babies organised. A mental shortlist of exactly what's going to make this trip one not only manageable with two small babes....but fun too. One of our must-haves for good times + travel are essential oils. Little mini life-savers for a huge number of reasons. I've listed just a few of our ESSENTIALS for travel and how we'll be using them as we fly around a few different states + roadtrip into some Californian National Parks too.

if I had my way, I'd be packing my complete essential oil stash to take with us. But for the sake of less luggage, here are my top oils that''ll be by my side the entire trip.

Travel Essentials

Oh she's a beauty. So many uses for this purple hero. Just a few applications are

- Spritz some lav on hotel beds to kill any lurking nasties AND to catch some sweet sweet zzzzzz's

- Works a treat on any burns/cuts/bites that can happen on the road

- Relaxation and restfulness on the flight. I'll be pouring it straight from the bottle on my two babes pre-flight {the other passengers can thank me when we land} ;-).

- A drop of Lav + Fractionated Coco Oil is all I need for an end-of-day beautiful face clean {also perfecto if you have an angry spot on your face...lav helps soothe the inflammation}.

- My ultimate flight buddy to calm nerves

- One drop of this mixed with some Fractionated Coco oil makes a beautiful back massage for my toddler. When she needs some grounding and calm, we whip our this oil and have a little massage ritual.

- This oil comes in some little mini beadlets. We'll be popping one of these under our tongue several times mid-flight to support our immune systems.

- A drop of OnGuard + a little moisturizer or Fractionated Coco oil makes up a quick anti-bac handwash. Helps in flight + on the road to keep Le Germs away.

- Rub a {diluted} few drops of OnGuard on to the soles of the feet for continued Immune Support.

- A drop on the temples + rubbed into your scalp will support head and neck tension in no time {perfect for during long haul flights}

- If you've had too much caffeine, or you're trying to move past jetlag with a pep in your step, just dab some Pep behind your ears and/or drop a drop in the palm of your hands, cup them over your nose and inhale deeply.

- Peppermint is also an awesome alternative to DigestZen {below} to tummy upsets. If you need some digestive support, drop one drop in your water and sip as needed.

- One drop of DigestZen {Digestive Blend} into a glass of water after a big meal or to start the day = a happy tummy

- For digestive issues, do the above and/or dilute with coco oil and rub on lower abdomen

This outdoor blend is a staple for us - in our backyard and in our travels. Keeps Le Bugs away without the nasty chemical smell + toxins.

Ice Blue Athletic Rub AND OnGuard Throat Losenges

My last two "essentials" for any kind of travel that involves sitting in a confined space for long periods of time {ouch....muscle pain} and being in close proximity to germy peeps too. The athletic rub feels cool and soothing to rub into any sore muscles or stiff necks that come along with long haul travel + roadtrips. And I always ALWAYS have at least a couple of the OnGuard losenges within reach when I know I'm going to be on a plane and in air con for longer than a few hours. A little immune support never goes astray.

** The oils I refer to in this article are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. Not all essential oils are created equally so make sure the oil you choose carries the CTPG quality testing so that you're ingesting oils safely (only one company in the world has this quality standard).

Why You Should Start Your Business Before Babies

The title of this blog is meant to throw you a little. You might think “but Alice….you are all for guiding Mums who want to build their business in the cracks of motherhood/life or ”but Alice….you grew your own essential oils business on maternity leave and are so passionate about showing other Mums how to do that too". Right?

And No.

You see. Maternity leave isn’t a holiday. And it’s not just a time where you can take months away from your usual full-time work with a bunch of leisurely time to dedicate to a business. There’s your body that has to heal (ladies, there are places I didn’t even know could be sore after I gave birth to my two babes). There’s your relationship which goes through huge shifts and emotional overhaul in the first year- or more - of navigating parenthood together. There’s your sense of self which shifts dramatically because you’re not just responsible for yourself anymore. And there’s this new little thing in your life which has just become your everything….and more than likely is affixed to your boob for hours and hours everyday.

There's lots of poo (and so much talking about poo ....why oh why is the word poo now a fixture in every conversation!?). There's often vomit as well. Oh and very little sleep. And sometimes you're lucky enough to get the trifecta of all three at the same time #glamorous.

If you think I’m painting a negative picture here, please let me tell you I’m not. Motherhood is the best (BEST) thing that I’ve ever chosen for myself. All the emotional stretching shapes me into a better person daily. And the love I have for my babies isn’t something my writing can even fully express.

But is it the best time to start a new business? Nope.

Is it possible to start a new business on maternity leave and carve out a new future for yourself? Yep.

Is it a much better idea to already have a thriving business and residual income so that when it’s time for you actually start a family and go on maternity leave, you can take time for what matters most; your fam, your babe and yourself? YEP YEP YEP.

I started my educating people on how to use essential oils (my business) when I was 8 months pregnant with my second babe because the opportunity didn’t present itself until then. Or more accurately, I didn't seek out the opportunity until then. So when I hear women say to me “oh, this business sounds like something I’d love to do when I’m a Mum and I have time” (cue laughter from all the Mums around the world), it kind of makes my heart hurt.

My heart hurts because I want to tell you you'll never have the time or opportunity as much as you do NOW.

My heart hurts because I know that this business needs time to marinate and grow. There's no get rich quick stuff about growing a legit and longterm residual income business like mine. But the thing is.. even if you want to grow your business at the pace of a turtle, you'd still be so far ahead compared to if you never started at all.

Here's a pic of what the doTERRA leadership ranks equate to in average earnings. To give you some perspective, here's also the timeline of how long it took me to reach each rank (and bear in mind that yes I did build my business on mat leave and it IS possible....but it's certainly not for everyone. I was consistent and worked my butt off, even when I'd been up all night breastfeeding my newborn). .

Silver -  I reached this rank in 8 months (takes an average of 13 months)

Gold - I reached this rank in 13 months (takes average of 14 months)

Platinum - I reached this rank in 15 months (takes average of 22 months)

I now teach other people how to grow their own big businesses and lives by duplicating my business model.

I know deeply also that you just don't get it yet. Cause motherhood is an idea to you right now and you see it somewhere further ahead of you. And you think you know how you'll feel when you become a Mum. That you won't change. That things will be the same. But I'm here to tell you that for 99% of women....they would rather be financially able to stay at home with their kids (and pursue something meaningful for themselves - like a career - with flexibility from home) rather than have to go back to work after 4.5 - 12 months of meeting and falling head over heels for their babe.

My hope is that you get to be one of the few women who gets to enjoy every blissful moment of time with their babes, free from any financial or emotional stress. Completely available for the only thing in the world that matters; snuggling on the couch with your new babe.

PS. Didn't have time to read this whole blog? In a nutshell....start your own flexible at home business NOW...while you have time. Don't wait till you have babies because it's way more challenging and exhausting. I can guide you on exactly how to grow your own biz with a beautiful product that people actually need - over here.

Start a Home-Based Business....on a Budget

So you want to start a online business, huh? Or maybe you have one simmering along already.  Hurray! Happy dance and balloons in the air and all-around celebrations to you, ladyboss.

But.... you start to realise you have to make some investments to actually move your business forward. And you're wondering how the hell you'll do that on a start-up budget.

No probs....I've got you covered.

So, you can absolutely start with no costs at all but over time you'll need to put some systems in place. Maybe a website, some way of sharing your story online to the masses, a way of actually reaching new peeps, email systems, calendars......

Even though there's a long list of things that can get costly, you can actually do it on a budget. And without the stress of over-spending when you're a start up. Because, let's face it, there’s enough to feel apprehensive about when you’re first starting your business. Throwing debt and big investments into the mix when you're brand new (or even into your first year) isn’t a stellar idea.

So let's talk about starting off your business on a budget with the simple but really effective online tools that will allow you to put systems and the framework in place for you to operate like a major player even when you are brand new.

....and most likely working from a second hand desk with a wonky chair in a room that looks far from the dream office you have pinned on pinterest.

So here's the budget basics you can start with until you're rolling in the dollar dollar bills. Which you will be.

Every (EVERY) solopreneur needs an integrated online booking calendar. It's the only way that you can effortlessly have clients book in times to work with you, minus the back and forth emails to figure out specific availabilities. Having your pre-scheduled availability in something like calendly also means there's no way clients can request to work with you when you....well...don't want to be working.

Price. $0 for the simple version of $8 per month for more features

Dollar Photo Club

Look, this isn't my absolute favourite stock photo website (stocksy.com is amazing), but it's so affordable. And if you need a stack of quality stock images that don't need your pretty face featured in them, it's really hard to beat a price tag of $1 per image.

Price: $1 per image.

Online space to send and receive huge files, plus online storage for those said huge files. It's great because you won't end up killing your inbox (or someone elses) with a ridiculous sized file you're trying to send. Awesome for creative professionals or working with creative professionals (because you'll be sending high res images a lot) and even for training your team (sending audio and video files that can take up loads of room).

Cost: free or $12 per month for dropbox pro or $17 per month for dropbox Business

zoom (kinda like Skype)

Perfect for team training, webinars, 1:1 coaching, recording videos, screen sharing ....the whole shebang. It's not as slick as some of the other webinar platforms, but it'll give you all the basics you need to kick off and you can record sessions (which is handy for sending those to your team or to your clients after your call with them).

Price: FREE for sessions under 45 minutes. Pro Account $14 per month. Business Account $19 per month

Mail chimp

Everyone needs a way to keep track of client contact deets + set up basic automation (more of that in another blog post) so your emails work for you (not the other way around). This is a basic but great starting point.

Price: FREE for the basic account. $15-$20 per month for list between 500-2000 people.

100 Ways to Use the Top 10 Essential Oils

The Home Essentials Kit comes with ten of the most popular oils- a great way to get started!

There are literally thousands of uses for the oil in this kit but I have put together a few of my fav top 10 ways to use them.

Lavender Essential Oil Ideas

First Aid in a bottle. When in doubt use I always lavender!

  1. Diffuse Lavender with a few drops of Vetiver to help fall asleep and stay asleep. You might also enjoy the Serenity (Lavender Peace in Australia) blend, which includes Lavender. This works wonders for jet lag or those nights that you just can’t seem to shut your racing mind off.
  2. Fun for the kiddies: play dough!  Try purple and add some Lavender, Orange and some Wild Orange, Green or Blue with some Balance, they will get the calming effects of the oils while they play! Recipe here.
  3. Calm the kids with a lavender foot massage. Diluted with carrier oil and rub the soles of their feet to calm them down before bed. I also like to mix with water and make a spray to spritz (my pillow) and their bed as well. Why is it mom’s best friend? Find out why
  4. Soak away your days troubles. Mix a cup of Epsom salts, baking soda, and a few drops of Lavender to your bath.
  5. Head To Toe Rest! Soothe sore muscles after a hard work out or a long day on your feet, rub Lavender along with Lemongrass on your legs and feet.
  6. Soothe a sore babies bum, mix lavender and geranium in coconut oil and use at change time. You can also make your own chemical free baby wipes!
  7. HOT! For burns apply diluted Lavender oil to the affected area to soothe skin irritation, relieves pain redness and ease swelling.
  8. Homemade Aftershave. Use after shaving to soothe and soften skin and to lessen the redness and burning caused by razor burn.
  9. Take the “Ouch” out. One drop of Lavender will help relieve the pain and sensitivity of occasional sore gums, teething, dry or chapped lips, occasional scrapes and abrasions, or after too much sun. Also works great for soothing irritated bug bites!
  10. Clear the mind and soothe emotions. Apply Lavender to the temples and back of neck to lessen the effects of stress and anxious feeling and to promote mental clarity. Or simple just inhale straight from the bottle.

Lemon Essential Oil Ideas

  1. Soothe an irritated throat, layer Frankincense and Lemon over the throat area or take a drop of Lemon in a small amount of raw honey.
  2. Lemonize your life: Diffuse lemon to neutralize odours. You can also use a few drops on cotton balls and place in your fridge, car, in shoes, wherever you want to get rid of nasty smells.  A drop in the garbage bin is a great deodorizer.
  3. 3pm pick me up: When lacking motivation or energy, inhale Lemon. Like all citrus oils, is very uplifting and also promotes positive mood and cognitive ability.
  4. Flavour boost, dōTERRA oils are safe enough to take internally therefore you could add a drop of Lemon essential oil anytime you are cooking with lemon juice to give a richer flavour.   I love a drop on papaya (to take me back to Hawaii), on salmon or in my homemade hummus.
  5. Smell lemons not chemicals: Add a couple drops of Lemon essential oil to your dishwater or to the rinse section of your dishwasher. Lemon is amazing at cutting through grease and grime and will live your glassware sparkling.
  6. Make an All Purpose Cleaning Spray. In a glass bottle with a spray trigger add a quarter cup of Vinegar and 30 drops of your choice of essential oils, any Citrus oil like Lemon will make a great cleaner (disinfects and deodorizes) You could also add a squirt of the dōTERRA cleaner concentrate, spray and wipe. Full recipe
  7. Remove sticky labels with lemon essential oil! Simply add a few drops of the oil to the label, wait a minute or so and it will peel right off.
  8. DYI pledge: Make your own natural wood polish using olive oil and Lemon or Wild Orange essential oil. Recipehere.
  9. See ya allergies: Lemon promotes a healthy respiratory function; try diffusing two drops Lemon, two drops Peppermint and two drops Lavender for a great seasonal allergy relief blend.  For a more convenient approach; try  dōTERRA’s Triease Softgels which contain Lemon essential oil.
  10. Wash and clean your produce. A few drops of lemon to water will do the job! Read more

  2. Nourish Your Skin. Use a drop of Frankincense with 3 drops of carrier oil or dōTERRA Spa Hand and Body Lotion for beautiful, radiant looking skin. Try the Salubelle (Immortelle from the US) for your face. Frankincense has been used for centuries for challenged skin, skin problems and nearly everything related to skin.  It’s wonderful for aging skin too!  Apply directly to the skin.
  3. Overworked Hands? Rub Frankincense on your hands after a long day of hands on work to promote a normal inflammatory response.  This works great for my swollen finger joints.
  4. Time To Focus. Apply 1-2 drops to your temples and the back of your neck to help improve your concentration. It’s also one of the oils in the Intune Focus Blend.

  8. Cold or Flu Buster.  Next time you have a respiratory infection from a cold or flu, use frankincense essential oil to help provide relief from coughing.  It also acts as an anti-inflammatory in the nasal passages making breathing easier, even for those with allergies or asthma. Better yet~Prevention: I like to put a drop of frankincense on my tongue or on  chest to help support the immune system to naturally fight viruses.
  9. Relax And Revitalize. Soak in a warm Frankincense bath to calm the nerves or diffuse Frankincense in the bathroom while you relax in the tub.  Such a calming woodsy aroma.
  10. Calm your nerves. Frankincense can be applied to the bottoms of feet to relax and calm mood swings. Great for grounding during mediation or yoga.  Diffuse in the room or massage a drop onto the chest or back of the neck.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca in the US) Ideas

  1. Zit Zapper: You can also apply to skin blemishes and rashes as part of a daily cleansing program.
  2. Say Goodbye To Razor Burn! Apply diluted Melaleuca and fractionated coconut oil after shaving to prevent any skin irritation.  Consider also mixing with Lavender or Frankincense for added benefit.
  3. Refresh Your Wash. Add a couple drops of Melaleuca to laundry detergent. Works great for those smelly towels.
  4. Baby Bottom Remedy. Mix with Fractionated Coconut Oil, Lavender, and Frankincense to make a diaper paste for baby’s irritated skin.
  5. Relieves earaches; Place 1-2 drops on a cotton ball (with Lavender) and place over the ear; fixing in place with tape. Never place essential oils IN the ear.
  6. Bug be gone! Spray your kids hats and hair with water, Tea Tree and Rosemary; head lice DON’T like these oils.
  7. First Aid: Tea tree is great for occasional scrapes and skin irritations, as it works as an antiseptic on small cuts.
  8. Foot problems? If you are showering, swimming or exercising in public, high traffic public areas apply melaleuca directly to the feet or apply to toenails if fungus has gotten the best of them.
  9. Chemical-Free Cleaning.  Clean your tools(see here) A few drops in a water to soak your makeup brushes and toothbrushes. Or dilute 8-10 drops with water in a spray bottle to clean around the house or as a yoga mat cleaner.

Oregano Essential Oil Ideas

Less Is More. Oregano is a very hot/caustic oil and is one of the most potent essential oils—PLEASE BE CAREFUL and use safety when using oregano.  Always heavily dilute for topical use. Stay away from sensitive areas and wash your hands thoroughly.  I can tell you from experience that it will heat up pretty quickly if applied undiluted!

  1. Clean and Purify surfaces with Oregano oil, you could add a few drops to your All Purpose Cleaning Spray!
  2. Apply to warts, surround the area with Fractionated Coconut Oil and apply a drop of Oregano Oil to a bandaid and cover every day for at least a week.
  3. Mama Mia!  Bring the flavour of Italy into your cooking; add a drop to your big batch of Spaghetti sauce/ pizza sauce, on a roast or Bolognese  (just a drop adds SO much flavour)
  4. Natural Defence: Support the immune system by applying Oregano with OnGuard the Protective blend to the soles of the feet (diluting with Fractionated Coconut Oil of course) and/or adding this combo to your diffuser for the whole family to benefit.
  5. Oregano is also a fantastic respiratory support. Diffuse a few drops with Easy Air/Breathe at night. Apply diluted down your spine.
  6. Health begins with a good gut!  Oregano is a key ingredient in dōTERRA’s GX Assist, for good reason! It acts as a cleanse and support a healthy digestive tract. Oregano oil is known to stimulate the flow of bile into the digestive organs, enhancing the digestive process.
  7. Chilly Feet? I can’t sleep if my feet are cold so I like to dilute 1 drop of Oregano in a decent amount of fractionated coconut oil and massage my feet to warm them up before bed.
  8. Ward off insects.  Carvacrol in oregano oil works as a natural insect repellant. Try putting a few drops on outdoor furniture to keep the pests away.
  9. Spot treatment for those little skin imperfections.  Skin tags or age spots will be lessened but use sparingly! Oregano is potent.  Dilute 1 drop to 2ml carrier oil for adults.
  10. Protection Against Harmful Organisms.  If you’ve consumed undercooked meat or impure water Oregano will help rid those unwanted invaders residing inside of your belly.

On Guard Protective Blend Ideas

  1. Diffuse On Guard anytime you are concerned about what germs are in the air especially after being out in crowded public areas. Find out why it works

  5. Scrub a dub dub!! Mix 5-6 drops with a half-cup of baking soda to clean your bath tub and skip all of the harsh, bleaching chemicals. Put in a spray bottle and spray your shower-Clove oil (which is in OnGuard) is a great mould killer!
  6. Mouth Moment: Fantastic blend for dental health (it contains Clove after all!)  Apply On Guard directly to your teeth and gums with some Coconut Oil (or add a drop to your toothpaste) to soothe irritated irritation. You could also try oil pulling with a tablespoon of Virgin Coconut oil and a drop or two of On Guard (See here).   For a clean toothbrush, soak it in a small glass of water with 3-5 drops of On Guard.

  9. Make your own Foaming Hand Soap.
  10. Add a drop of OnGuard to your apple sauce or soak cut apples in water with a drop or two of OnGuard for a yummy immune boosting snack with a zing!

  8. A Great Neutralizer. Use 1-2 drops in 4-6 ounces of water as a mouth rinse with water at night if you’ve eaten a meal with strong smells, like garlic, onion, curries and more. If you like the taste of black licorice, you will love the taste of DigestZen because of the Fennel essential oil.
  9. After a big night out Digestzen can make a great mouth wash. Add a few drops in water and rinse well.
  10. When you travel or venture out to an unfamiliar restaurant, it’s easy to have digestive distress.  Prevent discomfort by taking DigestZen to prevent or lessen the effects of certain foods.

  10. Boot camp basics! I love to apply breathe to my chest or inhale straight from the bottle before exercising to help to open up and invigorate my lungs!

Ice Blue (called Deep Blue if ordering from US) Ideas

  1. Support your workout. Rub diluted on muscles before and after exercise to reduce discomfort.
  2. Computer pains? Try rubbing this blend diluted on the shoulders and neck to recover and ease muscle tension.
  3. Fingers needing some TLC? Stuck at the computer or texting too much? This blend is great for those who spend long hours typing. Just massage into the hands, fingers and wrists when needed.
  4. Growing pains: Massage Ice Blue diluted in carrier oil onto the growing kids’ legs before bedtime to help with occasional aches associated with growth spurts.
  5. Best of Both Worlds: This blend provides a cooling and warming sensation that cools joints yet warms muscles and soothes occasional joint or bone pain.
  6. This Soothing Blend contains blue tansy and Helichrysum which when used regularly, can help promote long term muscle, joint and bone health. It can also help promote and maintain normal inflammatory response in cells.
  7. When the kids come home with a few bumps from their sports activities, apply Deep Blue to effected areas to help support localized blood flow.
  8. Muscle Miracle: Occasionally, muscles will cramp if they have been worked hard or are lacking the vitamins they need. For these muscle cramps, try massaging Deep Blue into the area.
  9. This blend provides a cooling and warming sensation that cools joints yet warms muscles and soothes occasional joint or bone pain. Keep your runner’s knee in tiptop condition with Deep Blue. Application after a long run will help soothe the joint and promote strong, healthy muscles.
  10. Take this blend to your next massage and ask your therapist to use it on you (a great way to introduce the oils to them too!).

These are just a few of the ways to use these amazing oils.

Remember that a little goes a long way:

  • Nine 15ml bottles (approx. 250 drops in each)
  • One 5ml bottle (approx. 85 drops)

*Many of these ideas have been adapted from the dōTERRA blog post and this article is from my colleague Erin over at Erin Naturally.

Essentialism. Doing less and living more.

In September 2015 I was perched on the edge of the north rim of the Grand Canyon with my baby girl, Mac (we weren't precariously close to the edge....don't worry). My husband took this shot of us whilst holding my two year old daughter, Quinn, who was on the road with us as well. Our epic fam jam roadtrip took us from California through Nevada and Arizona and then north to Utah. Our destination wasa 4 day convention with the essential oils company I partner with in my business.

But back to the ledge for a moment.

So there we were. Perched on top of the Grand Canyon. Enjoying. Relaxing (as much as you can with two small children) and later that day we drove on to another mind-blowing landscape; Zion National Park.

All this time, I had limited internet access. A lot of my business is online, given that the majority of the beautiful women on my team and my oils customers are all over the world. So communication, and the odd facebook training/fun/oils post is key. But I chose not to get a sim card for my iPhone and instead plug in to the wifi when it was available. And for the rest of the time, I just wanted to be in the moment with my fam. Just enjoying....well....this epic view for starters.

Thanks to the USA being the USA (and not Australia, that is) wifi was great and I managed to jump on and spend about 30 minutes most days connecting, responding to enquiries and coaching some of my oils tribe biz builders. The max time I spent online each day was an hour.

After driving back to California post-convention in Utah and taking a surprisingly delightful flight home with my dude and my girls, we returned home. I logged into my oils team online office, where all financial info is kept.

With still 2 more weeks left of the month, my business had already surpassed the gross volume (yes....dollar volume we're talking) than the entire previous month. In other words, September was kicking August's ass.

And yet....I'd just been sashaying around another country for two weeks. With my fam. Enjoying the odd (cough...maybe a couple) Californian red wines, connecting with the Canadian girls in my global tribe who I've had the pleasure of working with for the last 7 months, and really, just having the best time ever.

Which brings me to this.  I've been throwing around the hashtag #dolesslivemore recently and this trip was the living breathing essence of that vision. It's easy to throw about a term and talk about doing less to make room for personal/business/relationship growth, but how many of us actually do it? How many of us continue to preach something that we're not even in the work of doing ourselves? Beautiful quotes that are jamming up facebook and instagram feeds at the moment but are they reflections of what we're creating in our lives or are they merely what we hope for and aspire to?

I believe (and this is what I coach the women in my oils tribe too) that it's not about being the richest, the best, the quickest to reach your goals or to be loved by anyone except yourself. That's the work of the ego. Instead I strive for a business and life of FEELING great, of balance. For me that means building up a killer long term residual income without compromising on the time I have with my family. And growing a solid business that continues to grow even when I travel.

The key to making all of this happen?

Simplify. Focus on the aspects of your business that are yielding the most growth - for you and your bottom line. Let go of anything that feels like a "hustle" or like hard work and instead know truly that when life is filled with ease and when you stop pushing, abundance will flow in you, and towards you, freely.

How to Create a {legit} Profitable At-Home Business on Maternity Leave.

How to Use Your Maternity Leave (or time at home as a fulltime Stay at Home Mama) to Grow a {legit} 6 Figure Business. AKA: what I did.

Maternity leave is a beautiful time for newborn snuggles, recovery from the biggest event your body will probably ever go through (no matter how you brought your babe into the world, your body needs time to heal) and time to get to know your beautiful little person. But what if it could also be a time where you could begin to carve out a new future for yourself? New goals, new priorities, new purpose and….also maybe your very own business?

It might initially seem crazy to want to start something completely new when you’re about to go on maternity leave (or if you’re already on your maternity leave now). There’s so much new stuff to get your head around, already right? But that’s exactly what I did. With an 18 month old toddler and a very full baby of belly (I was 8 months pregnant) I decided to start my own business. Because that seems like the logical thing to do, right? Ha. But jokes aside, it really did feel logical because the pull I felt towards starting my own business and creating something solid and longterm for my family was oh so real.

My heart was pulling me towards beginning something that was just mine – away from JUST the Mum role. Something that would set some beautiful foundations so that I could be at home with my babies and not go back to work after 6-12 months of maternity leave. I’d already been the work-out-of-home Mum for 12 months and it didn’t align with the vision I wanted to create in my life. Going back to work when my first daughter was only 6 1/2 months old left some lasting guilt + unhappiness that took me a while to work through. But being a stay at home Mum and not pursuing a career or business didn’t align for me either, though. I didn't "want it all"....I just wanted more choices and to land with an option that felt really right for me. Which was Motherhood +Purpose beyond that. And a way to make that profitable too.

So here's my top tips for you to create + grow a profitable and purposeful business while leveraging your time on Mat Leave.

but first ...some basics.

  1. Be in it for the long haul.
  2. Take care of yourself + fam first
  3. Let go of the need for perfection
  4. Redefine what balance means for you now that your life has changed. Big time.

ok....now the juicy stuff. First….be clear on your vision + why and enrol your support crew in it.

No (wo)man is an island. And no matter how strong you are (which you are....like Beyonce says "Who Runs The World...GIRLS") and how capable you are (which, again, you are), you’re going to need some help at some stage. In fact, it’s better to get in the habit of wanting help so that you are growing a business that is aligned with your vision and not one that has the potential to be energetically and physically draining. The goal isn't to be SuperWoman.

First up, sit down with a cup of tea, get your diffuser going with a blend of essential oils and write out your 2 year vision. Write it out in 1st person present tense.....all the details from waking up in the morning until you shut your eyes again at night. Write it as your ideal day 2 years from now and make it bold. Next? Share your vision with your support crew. Talk to those closest to you about what you’re creating. Really take the time to inspire them with your vision and why it is you’re passionate about this business and life you’re unfolding so they can support you along the way. If you partner and fam are onboard, they'll be more likely to offer support when they see you're stretching yourself a little too thin. And they'll be more understanding of the journey if they know what the big picture looks like for you and your fam too.

Pick a business model that leverages your time

Have you ever heard of the phrase “make money while you sleep?” Yeah…it’s a bit of a tagline at times and might have lost its shine a bit. But it can also be a completely non-hypey and legit way to leverage your time and make money when you aren’t actually putting in any hours at a desk.

Any (legit) business model that has passive income or residual income streams at its core are the businesses I choose to align with these days. I previously have been in fantastic jobs where I have felt pull of creative expression and fulfillment….but they were jobs where I was trading my time for money. Think 1 hour = 1 hour of pay. It’s basic and it’s also super limiting. Passive income is where you create a product (maybe an ebook, a physical book, a CD etc) once and then you have the ability to make money off that product again and again.

Residual income kicks passive income up a notch. Residual income comes from building an asset that continues to pay you after the work has been done. Network marketing (also called direct sales, word of mouth marketing or multi level marketing) gets a bad wrap because there are a lot of people who do it TERRIBLY (without integrity or just without an understanding of relationship building). But when you have a product that actually works, customers who want to buy it (and continue to buy it) and people doing the business side of things in an authentic and legit way, Network Marketing can be beautiful. And seriously abundant. The asset that you build with network marketing continues to build and build and build …..and those who are consistent at it and in it for the right reasons (to support others in reaching their goals) end up being rewarded in a BIG way with residual income wealth

PS yes. My business is a network marketing business. And yes, it ticks all of the criteria above. Click HERE to learn more about my business model and how you can duplicate it.

Multi-task like a boss

I know….I know…..the science is in and multi-tasking isn’t really meant to be all that productive. But my guess is that those scientists aren't trying to grow a business at home with kids around and a house to keep semi-tidy. Because in order to grow a business and raise babies you just have to multi-task. It’s a fact. It doesn’t mean you have to kill yourself while you’re at it, though. Depending on how your household runs (who cooks, who cleans, if you get a chance to make it to the gym a few days a week or not), here’s some tips that I’ve used to make the most of the little time I have every day to work on myself + my business.

  • Listen to audio books while you’re at the gym/cooking dinner/driving in your car. Have a list of 10 books that are recommended by the people who are successful in your business (those who are already where you want to be) and listen to them all. Work them into your day so that you’re making the best use of your time. If you have an hour commute to work 5 days per week, you’re going to have 10 hours per week to grow your leadership, belief and mindset more than most people would in a year.
  • Again, listen while you’re doing your day-to-day thing. Pick a few people to follow who are leaders in your field and listen in. I have recently been loving Tony Robbins’ Podcast, Farnoosh Torabi’s podcast, Denise Duffield-Thomas’ podcast and anything by Peta Kelly (she doesn’t do a podcast but she appears as a guest on a few).
  • Don’t clean up while your babies are asleep. Seriously just don’t. I know it’s so tempting to clean up and make your living space look beautiful before you sit down to do some work at a beautifully clean desk (that’s worthy of an Instagram flat lay). But just ignore the mess and use the limited time you have wisely (see next point). Then make the kids help you clean up when they’re awake. For my smallest babe, I sit her up in the high chair and bribe her with frozen blueberries so she’ll sit there quietly while I quickly do the dishes, tidy up, put on a load of washing etc. Glamourous stuff, right? Maybe not….but it works.

Focus on the Essentials.

Kinda the opposite of multi-tasking but, hey, sometimes business building comes with contradictions. But focusing on the right things with limited amounts of time is crucial. Stop scrolling facebook (my trick is to pre-schedule my posts OR just get in there, post and get straight out again), stop watching bad TV shows that don’t add to your life. Say yes to the things that light you up with joy and the things that are going to move your business forward too.

But most importantly.....do what you love.

This work at home gig isn't always going to be easy. Yes, the challenges outweigh the alternative (being at home with your babe/babies always trumps having to go to work without them and missing big moments). BUT....juggling business + Mum guilt (future blog on THAT) + all the stuff that goes along with motherhood.....well....it's a rollercoaster. An amazing, fulfilling and purposeful rollercoaster, but a rollercoaster nonetheless.

So please...love what you do. It'll make the challenging times not so challenging because the vision of what you're creating (for yourself + the world) will pull you through until all those seeds you've been planting start to grow.

Oh there's so much more to write on this subject. But start here. Before any of the actions or the "doing" in your business....start here. And goodluck, mama. You're doing an amazing job.
